På 1940-talet förvärvade collegestudenten Jay Garrick sina superhastighetsförmågor i en labbolycka och blev den första DC Superhero som gick under namnet Flash. År senare efterträddes Jay av polisforskaren Barry Allen, tills Barrys tidigare partner Wally West tog upp manteln vid en tidpunkt då Barry troddes vara dör.
